If you're craving rich, tender, and juicy shredded pork, you're in the right place!
At Creamery Creek Farms, we raise high-quality Duroc pork, and it's a tradition since the 1940s too! Durocs are red, slow growing, floppy eared pigs known for its deep flavor and incredible marbling.
And when it comes to making the perfect pulled pork, our Duroc Pork Boston Butt Roast is the cut you need.
Why Boston Butt for Shredded Pork?
Boston Butt (which actually comes from the shoulder) is packed with the ideal balance of fat and muscle, making it perfect for low-and-slow cooking. As it cooks, the fat melts into the meat, keeping it moist and giving you that melt-in-your-mouth texture.
How to Cook the Perfect Shredded Pork
The beauty of shredded pork is that it's simple to make but tastes like you spent all day perfecting it. Here's a foolproof recipe, and the one I use:
Ingredients:
- 1 Duroc Pork Boston Butt Roast (4-6 lbs)
- 2 tbsp salt
- 2 tbsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp onion powder
- 1 tsp cayenne (optional, for heat)
-
1/4 cup brown sugar
-
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
-
1 cup broth (pork, chicken, or beef)
Cooking Instructions:
-
Prep the Roast: Pat the roast dry and rub it generously with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, and brown sugar. Let it rest for 30 minutes to absorb the flavors. You can do this from frozen, or thawed. I prefer frozen!
-
Choose Your Cooking Method:
-
Slow Cooker: Place the roast in a slow cooker, add apple cider vinegar and broth, and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours until fork-tender.
-
Oven: Preheat to 275°F. Place the roast in a covered Dutch oven or roasting pan with the liquids. Cook for about 6-8 hours.
-
Smoker: Set your smoker to 225°F and cook for 10-12 hours, spritzing occasionally with apple juice or broth to keep it moist.
-
-
Shred & Serve: Once the pork is fall-apart tender, use two forks to shred it. Toss it in the remaining juices for extra flavor and moisture.

The Church Method for Perfect Beef Roasts
There is a whole world of cooking that never made it into cookbooks. It lives in church basements and community halls where somebody’s aunt has been feeding a crowd for decades and never once owned a digital thermometer. The “church basement method” is simple. Multiply the weight of your roast by time, set the oven to a steady low heat, and follow one important rule. Don’t peek.
It works with everyday beef roasts like sirloin tip, chuck, rump, and top round, which means you do not need a prime rib to put something special on the table.
