If you're even a minor foodie like me, you may have heard of the new-ish craze of butter boards and butter bombs. Think like a cheese charcuterie, but butter and wow in a different way. These two butter-centric trends, butter boards and butter bombs have been making waves in the culinary world over the past few years, and for good reason. Even my farm kids love the novelty!
Butter-Centric Trends
We use butter from the dairy plant we ship our milk to - Grassland Dairy in Greenwood, Wisconsin. We find that using high-quality Wisconsin butter is the key to success. The Grassland Butter brand is truly the best flavor of butter and when we travel or can't find it, it's a noticeable difference. Treat yourself to the best, Grassland AA Salted Quarters.
Butter Boards
A butter board is what it sounds like, a small wooden board that's used to serve butter, often accompanied by fresh bread or crackers.
The idea behind a butter board is to level up the presentation of butter as a standalone dish, and it's often served with different types of flavored compound butters, such as herb or garlic butter, even sweet butters like cinnamon and sugar. Butter boards are also great for entertaining your guests, as they create an eye-appealing display that's pretty ideal for sharing.
Butter Bombs
Butter bombs take the same idea and pack it into bite-sized flavor. Imagine little balls or scoops of compound butter seasoned with herbs, garlic, or spices. Drop one on a hot steak, toss into veggies, or melt on top of baked potatoes for instant flavor.
We make ours by mixing high-quality Wisconsin butter with herbs and Creamery Creek creekdust seasoning, then shaping them into small rounds and freezing them.
They’re great on grilled meats, roasted carrots, corn on the cob, or even a steamy baked potato. (Farm kid favorite: taco-seasoned butter bombs!)
Craze or trend?
Butter boards and butter bombs might sound like social media trends, but they’re actually clever ways to stretch flavor, make mealtime fun, and celebrate good butter.
- Add depth and color to simple dishes
- Turn butter into a centerpiece instead of a side note
- Encourage creativity with herbs and pantry staples
- Make great conversation starters for family meals or date nights
- And if you’re already using farm butter or Creamery Creek butter, you’re halfway there.

The Church Method for Perfect Beef Roasts
There is a whole world of cooking that never made it into cookbooks. It lives in church basements and community halls where somebody’s aunt has been feeding a crowd for decades and never once owned a digital thermometer. The “church basement method” is simple. Multiply the weight of your roast by time, set the oven to a steady low heat, and follow one important rule. Don’t peek.
It works with everyday beef roasts like sirloin tip, chuck, rump, and top round, which means you do not need a prime rib to put something special on the table.
