How Do I Buy a Half Hog?
Thinking About a Half Hog? Here's What to Expect
Buying a half hog from Creamery Creek is one of the best ways to fill your freezer with high-quality Duroc pork, raised right here on our family farm. It's a practical option for families who love variety and value knowing where their meat comes from. Here's how it all works, and what you'll actually get.
How Much Meat You'll Bring Home
A half hog from Creamery Creek yields about 100 pounds of take-home meat. How that breaks down:
50 lbs (about 50%) → Ground sausage
20 lbs (about 20%) → Pork chops and fresh pork steaks
30 lbs (about 30%) → Roasts, shoulders, and hams
That's enough to feed a family of four for months, depending on how often you cook pork. Everything is vacuum-sealed, labeled, and frozen, ready to tuck into your freezer.
Cuts You Can Expect
We work closely with our local butcher to make sure every share is cut for everyday use. Here's what typically comes from each section of the hog:
Loins
This is where pork chops, tenderloins, and roasts come from.
You'll choose between bone-in chops (our favorite for the best flavor) or boneless chops paired with baby-back ribs. Tenderloins can be left whole or sliced for quick meals.
Shoulders
The shoulder, also called the Boston Butt or Picnic Shoulder, is great for slow cooking, pulled pork, or hearty oven roasts.
You can have:
Two smaller roasts (3–4 lbs each)
Or one large roast (around 7–9 lbs)
If you prefer, you can have part of it turned into sausage instead.
Hams
Hams come from the hind leg and can be smoked or left fresh.
Options include:
Two smaller ham roasts (3–6 lbs each)
A large whole ham (8–10 lbs)
Or ham steaks for easy weeknight meals
We recommend smoked, it keeps the meat moist and adds that classic flavor.
Belly
The belly becomes bacon, sliced and smoked just the way you like it. We usually package our bacon in 1-lb packs, and we have thick cut bacon. If you prefer uncured pork belly slabs, we do that too!
Ribs
Expect spare ribs and sometimes country-style ribs (technically a shoulder cut). They're perfect for grilling or oven roasting.
Sausage
All the trim and smaller bits are ground and seasoned into your favorite sausage blends.
Each half hog usually includes two sausage flavors, such as:
Breakfast Maple (sweet)
Breakfast Sage (savory)
If you'd like a mix of plain ground pork for recipes, we can do that too.
Other Options
You can also ask for:
Leaf lard (for flaky pie crusts)
Fatback (for rendering or seasoning beans)
Heart or liver (if you use them for traditional dishes)
Just note these aren't included unless you request them.
How Ordering Works
Reserve your half hog.
Once we confirm your spot, we'll send you our Creamery Creek cut-sheet to fill out your preferences.
We deliver the order to our butcher.
Your instructions go straight to the processor so there's no confusion.
Pick-up or delivery.
When the pork is ready, we'll contact you with your total and arrange pick-up or shipping from our farm in Bangor.
A Note on Pricing
Prices are based on the hanging weight (the weight of the hog before cutting). The take-home yield after trimming and deboning is roughly 65–70% of that hanging weight, giving you around 100 lbs of packaged pork for a half share.
Why It's Worth It
You know exactly where your pork came from.
You can customize your cuts.
You'll have a freezer full of family-friendly meals, from breakfast sausage to Sunday roasts.
It's one of the best ways to eat better pork, save money over time, and support a Wisconsin family farm.
Always thanks, XOXO,
Louisa
